What is printmaking? Printmaking is a technique where the original artwork is created and executed in a print medium such as a screenprint, linocut or etching. In this context, the print itself is the original artwork, not a reproduction of another piece such as a painting or drawing.
The artist can make one print called a monoprint or a limited quantity of prints called an edition. Each print is considered an original work of art, not a copy.
Unlike prints that are photographic or digital reproductions of existing artworks (For example a poster or a giclée print that are a copy of painting), printmaking in this sense are not copies—they are the intended and final form of the artist’s vision.

In screenprinting a mesh fabric with tiny holes is stretched over a frame. This is called the screen. The artist draws a stencil that is applied to the mesh fabric with photographic chemicals. Then the artist pushes ink through the stencil onto paper with a special squeegee. Each color in the artwork is applied to the paper using a separate stencil, allowing for rich layering and precise detail.
